Evaluating the Use of BMR Corn as an Acceptable Forage Source for Grazing Cattle
نویسنده
چکیده
Montana is a typically low-rainfall area with limited irrigation in some areas. Moisture is critical for producing high-yielding, highquality forages. Finding forage species that can produce both a high-quality and high-yielding product is important for livestock producers throughout Montana and the region. While quality of perennial and annual grasses may be comparable to corn, their yield per acre is significantly less. Corn is commonly used in other parts of the country as a forage source, whether it be for grazing, hay, or silage. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were: to evaluate whether the improved BMR (Brown Midrib) corn varieties are an acceptable grazing source for livestock, identify any anti-quality factors that may be associated with BMR corn, and to identify the average nutrient values for the three varieties. We hypothesized that these improved BMR corn varieties would be an acceptable grazing source for livestock, and would be able to be utilized by producers as another forage option in their livestock management.

Effect of supplemental ground flaxseed fed to beef cattle grazing summer native range on the northern Great Plains.
Two experiments were conducted simultaneously to evaluate the effects of supplemental ground flaxseed on site and extent of digestion and growth performance in beef cattle grazing summer native range. Six Angus heifers (initial BW 367 +/- 8.0 kg) fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used in Exp. 1, and 18 Angus cross steers (initial BW 368 +/- 4.6 kg) were used in Exp. 2. Cattle from ...
متن کاملFORAGES AND PASTURES SYMPOSIUM: Optimizing the use of fibrous residues in beef and dairy diets.
Increased corn prices over the past decade have altered land use away from traditional forage in favor of corn. Accordingly, beef and dairy producers have had to adopt nontraditional forage resources into their production systems, many of which have become available as a result of increased corn production. Corn residues have become more available due to increases in corn hectares and yield. Th...
متن کاملBrown Midrib Forage Sorghum, Sudangrass, and Corn: What Is the Potential?
Brown midrib, a genetic mutation in several grassy species, reduces lignin content in the total plant parts. Lignin is mostly indigestible but also plays an important role in plant rigidity. During the past several years the brown midrib (bmr) trait has been incorporated into forage sorghum, sudangrass, and corn. The results have been significant for the most part. IVTD values for bmr sorghum h...
متن کاملMethane emissions of beef cattle on forages: efficiency of grazing management systems.
Fermentation in the rumen of cattle produces methane (CH4). Methane may play a role in global warming scenarios. The linking of grazing management strategies to more efficient beef production while reducing the CH4 emitted by beef cattle is important. The sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique was used to determine the effects of best management practices (BMP) grazing compared with continu...
متن کاملID-152: Grazing Corn: An Option for Extending the Grazing Season in Kentucky
Grazing is the cheapest way to feed cattle on a cost per pound of nutrient basis. However, producers with limited land resources in Kentucky have been able to use commodities or grain by-products to increase cattle numbers due to low cost and availability of these inputs. Extending the grazing season is one solution that would enable producers to reduce costs and expand production with little o...
